In Her Nature

Emma Piercey

Rooted in ecofeminism, ‘In Her Nature’ explores the intersections between humans and nature through a naturally fibrous two look collection. The collection rejects human exceptionalism, nurturing environmental sustainability and ecological consciousness within both society and self. The human–nature connection further emerges through the symbolic relationship between women and Mother Earth, reclaiming femininity and nature as one. This connection unfolds physically through traces of historical women’s dress and organic materials such as naturally dyed flower prints, weavings, and living root textiles. By utilizing slow making and growing the materials used, ‘In Her Nature’ invites the wearer, viewer, and maker to participate in a living relationship with nature based on reciprocity, care, and mutual connection.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Emma Piercey

Emma Piercey is a multidisciplinary designer exploring the intersection of fashion and sustainability. Her practice investigates organic processes in both material and method, working with living systems such as root textiles, natural dyeing, and utilizing nature in all forms of her work.

Through an experimental approach to construction and textiles, Emma challenges conventional garment systems, emphasizing transformation, temporality, and the relationship between the body and environment. Her work reflects a commitment to responsible design, reimagining fashion as a regenerative and evolving practice.

While studying at Toronto Metropolitan University, Emma has worked as a Research Assistant on the Flax to Linen project, through which she has presented at DesignTO and Landmade. Working out of the TMU Urban Farm, the hands on research examines traditional textile development from flax seeds through each stage of processing to woven linen. In her fourth year, Emma received the Helen and Sulo Hutko Award, recognizing her for achievement in design. Additionally, Emma participated in a study exchange, spending a semester at the London College of Fashion in England. After her studies, Emma will continue as an artist in the field of design and textiles proposing possibility for a sustainable fashion future.
