Mimic

Shai Shai

My collection, “Mimic”, reflects my journey of searching for identity. At times, I have felt as though I am simply a collection of traits, styles, and ideas gathered from the people around me. In trying to understand who I am, this left me feeling lost, as if my identity was made up of borrowed pieces rather than something truly my own. Through this collection, I explore those emotions and the idea that confidence is a state of mind. “Mimic” examines how identity can be shaped by the influences we absorb over time. In creating this work, I began to see these influences not as something that makes me feel empty, but as part of the process of finding myself. The collection ultimately represents my journey toward self-discovery, embracing the complexity of identity, and loving myself.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Shai Shai

SHAI SHAI – I am a fashion designer whose work blends the emotions of chaos and intention. My practice is rooted in an alternative visual language that puts fashion don’ts in the limelight and pushes the front, edgy, grunge style that the majority may not perceive well. My clothing is designed for people who want to exude femininity and interdisciplinary forms of beauty through raw emotion. I am drawn to the idea that clothes have identities and serve purposeful uses, with distressed surfaces and logo mania. I like to treat garments as artifacts of one’s personal history rather than simply as trends. My work is driven by my personal identity and how hard I’ve worked to get where I am. I try to blend the noise in my head with the visual noise in clothing. I think it’s a beautiful thing to be able to make what ur feeling into tactile objects. I’m interested in provoking narratives from deep within; what people carry, what people hide, literally or figuratively and how clothing becomes a second skin for some. I used a variety of methods to achieve my desired look in my pieces, including: hand-altered texture, distressing, deconstruction, and surface work and design. As I move forward, I would like to expand on experimental textile development, pushing the boundaries and standards of fashion design and experimenting with how I can make an impact, even if it only helps one person find themselves through my work, it will be worth it.
