The Glorification of Suffering

Madeleine Tihor: The Glorification of Suffering

The Glorification of Suffering is a study of 90s “Heroin Chic” imagery. Photographs by heroin chic photographers are manipulated, using methods such as cutting, tearing, taping, and more. The demolition and eventual assembly of these images represent the glorification of suffering within fashion imagery. I accompany these image manipulations with a body of text explaining the nuances and reasoning behind the destruction. Through research and creative work, I aim to prove that humans are both disgusted and attracted to human deterioration.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Madeleine Tihor: The Glorification of Suffering

I am an interdisciplinary artist working primarily with printed imagery. Through acts of destruction such as slicing, cutting and tearing, followed by careful reassemblage through duct tape or paste, I aim to reflect the nuances present within various images. I generally focus on a variety of topics related to human immorality, such as addiction, corruption, and deviance. These creative works are supported by research and written text to make sense of the careful demolition and reassemblage of each composition.
