It Was Never Just Clothes

Gazelle Dhillon

This project explores fashion as a reflection of identity through subcultures such as punk, emo, goth, skater and rave. Blending street photography with directed studio imagery, it moves between documentation and construction. It considers alternative style as something lived rather than performed, focusing on how people use clothing to take up space, communicate belonging and feel like themselves even when that clashes with what’s considered normal.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

A black and white full-body studio photograph of a young woman with long dark hair and bangs, dark eye makeup, and a nose ring, sitting angled on a white cube against a plain white background. She wears a black strapless corset with a rhinestone skull and crossbones, plaid trim, and side lacing, fishnet stockings with a subtle pattern, and black knee-high boots with white heart patches. Her accessories include a black choker, a heart pendant necklace, heart earrings, studded wrist cuffs, and rings. She also has a star tattoo on her left shoulder and a pistol tattoo on her right forearm, looking directly at the viewer.
