Memory as a Medium: The Art of Remembering

Julia Speciale

Memory as a Medium is more than a guide to understanding nostalgia through design, it is an exploration of the creative process that unfolds within our own memories. The connection between memory and design begins with a muse or experience that inspires creation. This publication questions what nostalgia is, and why it holds such power within design practice.Through a combination of research, visual exploration, and structured assignments, the book invites the reader to actively engage with their own memories. These exercises are designed to transform reflection into creation, strengthening the relationship between personal experience and design output.Ultimately, this work positions nostalgia not only as a subject of study, but as a tool one that allows designers to create with emotion, intention, and meaning really strengthening the art that is remembering.
