An Archive of Longing

Taya Volk

An Archive of Longing is a book that explores the universal experience of nostalgia and the ways it is felt and remembered. Through photographs, interviews, cyanotypes, and mixed media, it examines how the past continues to shape the present. By weaving these together, the work highlights how memory connects people through feelings of connection, loss, and belonging. The project was inspired by a desire to return to a moment or time shared with someone. Nostalgia often embeds itself in people, places, and objects, leading to my curiosity about its psychological impact. By bridging both personal and collective perspectives, the book exists as both an intimate reflection and a broader exploration. As I approached my final year of university, I became more aware of how much I would miss it once it was over. I am naturally sentimental, and this book became a way of preserving those emotions as something tangible, a physical memory. Drawing on personal archives and lived moments, An Archive of Longing invites viewers to reflect on their own histories and consider how longing exists not only as remembrance, but as something that continues to live within everyday life.
