From Here

Tysa Laidlow

Aiming to explore how the immigration of Caribbean people to Toronto has massively impacted the city’s cultural identity, From Here creates an immersive reading experience that educates members of the Caribbean community and those of other cultures alike on the distinguishing characteristics of Toronto that are the direct result of an adoption of Caribbean culture. Designed for two-directional reading, the book features two sections allowing it to explore both the importance of tradition and the necessity of growth in regards to the Caribbean cultural identity. Through a combination of photography and written narratives, From Here positions Caribbean culture not as a static influence on Toronto, but as an ever-growing foundation that continues to shape how the city lives today.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Tysa Laidlow

Tysa Laidlow is a Fashion Communications and Marketing student at Toronto Metropolitan University passionate about the fashion and beauty industry and business development. She has acquired an entrepreneurial mindset from working with small business start-ups and student-run groups to develop creative marketing campaigns and business strategies. Tysa believes that design is meant to solve problems, not create them, and therefore value functionality above all else in her work. However, functional design doesn’t mean boring. In fact, what drives her in the creative process is finding new ways to work with image and text that will both engage the audience and remain accessible to all. The fine line between these goals is where functionality lies, and for Tysa, creating that balance is the most exciting part of design.

Experienced in graphic design, content creation, social media marketing, and editorial production across digital and print platforms, Tysa is interested in roles that will allow her to use her skills to promote inclusivity, challenge stereotypes, and contribute to purpose-driven campaigns in the fashion, beauty, lifestyle, or cultural sectors.
