Dents by Emily Heese

Dents

Inspired by the nostalgia of getting all bundled up to go outside and play in the snow with her sisters as a child, Emily’s capstone collection aims to revisit the joys of girlhood, tactile comforts, early sisterhood, and dress-up through the lens of thought provoking and texturally rich pieces. Through the utilization of plush quilted textiles, oversized silhouettes, and intentionally designed cut-outs, this collection juxtaposes the notion of being “all dolled up”. The idea that we are able to be warm, held, and soothed, yet, at the same time, exposed and vulnerable to exterior elements.

Through the practicing of craft techniques such as free motion quilting, tambour embroidery, and beadwork, Heese’s capstone collection also serves as a method of meditation through artistic practice; the intentional, repetitive forming of beadwork designs, and the free, playful stitching of machine quilting. These techniques honour the endlessly creative and inspirational women that passed them down to Emily.
