Integral Fragmentation

This mixed media painting on rolled canvas draws inspiration from the art of storytelling, presented in a layered, collage-like style that reflects my family’s tradition of scrapbooking — a hobby I grew up with and continue to cherish. Using a combination of paper, stamps, and textured elements, the piece weaves together fragments of memories and emotions. Large-scale family portraits blend with decorative layers and personal touches, mimicking the way stories are preserved and pieced together over time.

At its core, this artwork reflects my bi-cultural experience — growing up feeling different and navigating a sense of not quite belonging. It speaks to the unique challenges and perspectives I’ve faced as the eldest daughter, balancing responsibilities that shaped my worldview. Central to this narrative is my relationship with my late father, whose presence — or absence — played a pivotal role in my development.

This piece explores the lasting impact a father has on his daughter’s growth, diving into themes of love, loss, identity, and the search for belonging. It stands as a tribute to family, culture, and the complex ties that shape who we become.
