Lynae Dav by Tasha Davis

Motif of the Veiled

Lynae Dav’s collection, Motif of The Veiled, draws inspiration from the sociological concepts introduced by W.E.B. Du Bois, specifically his notion of the “veil” and the divided self (Du Bois, 1897). The collection’s designs embody this duality, utilizing sheer fabrics that subtly expose the skin beneath. Symbolizing the revelation of one’s true self, while incorporating oversized elements that evoke the veil’s concealing nature. This interplay of transparency and concealment aligns with the brand’s core mission of dismantling the limitations that bind us, empowering individuals to embrace their fullest potential.

Lynae Dav's collection, Motif of The Veiled, draws inspiration from the concept of the "veil" and the notion of the divided self, as articulated by sociologist William Edward Burghardt Du Bois in 1897. The designs within this collection reflect these ideas through the use of sheer fabrics that subtly reveal the skin beneath, symbolizing the suppression of the true self. The incorporation of oversized elements further echoes the veil's role in concealment. This collection aligns with the overarching mission of the brand, which seeks to challenge the constraints that limit us as individuals, fostering a sense of liberation and self-expression.
The development process for this collection was thorough, with much of the aesthetic inspiration drawn from a painting created by Tasha over the summer, depicting a father and son playing chess. The painting’s portrayal of life as a series of decisions prompted a deeper exploration of the ideas of sociologist William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, particularly his insights into how life can be understood through sociological discoveries. The intersection of art, illustration, and social meaning served as the foundation for the inception of this collection.
