Amity in Flux

Amanda Shaw

Amity in Flux is an avant-garde, wearable-art cocktail dress collection that uses colourful fabrics, simple prints and whimsical design to inspire joy. It grapples with the change friendships undergo from adolescence to adulthood. It’s for when you’ve spent your life navigating the whirlwind together and suddenly you don’t even know what they do at work. How do you maintain connections that began through daily inside jokes made in the corner of the art hallway when you can only meet for coffee at 10:30 next Monday? Despite missing effortless fun, there can be joy practicing intentionality in your friendships. Each look in the collection is inspired by a lesson I’ve learned trying to be a better friend through this change. While it’s a form of reconciliation between my high school social life and my current struggle to make it to someone’s cocktail night, it’s also a celebration of having so many wonderful people to love!

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Amanda Shaw

Amanda Shaw is a doll maker, illustrator, videographer and fashion designer from Calgary Alberta currently working as a seamstress in Toronto. She is attending her fourth and final year of the Fashion Design program at Toronto Metropolitan University and will graduate in the spring. Her work is largely informed by the vibrancy of memories created with people she cares about. Growing up under the wonderful blues and neon sunsets of big sky country fuelled her fondness for bright colours which is a staple in all of her work. She enjoys using soft, shiny and patterned materials that elicit fun. Doll making introduced her to a love of sewing when she began creating her own characters in elementary school. It is important to her to imbue art with a feeling of joy which she hopes she can evoke in those that come across it!
