Adherence

Maya Taha

Adherence is rooted in the belief that fashion can embody both vulnerability and resistance, revealing the contradictions of femininity within patriarchal culture. Drawing on kenosis, or self-emptying, Adherence explores the shedding of imposed definitions of femininity to reclaim dress as an act of renewal and autonomy. Shaped by my own experiences with conflicting cultural expectations of women’s appearance, this work approaches clothing as a contested space where identity and authority are continually negotiated.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Maya Taha

Maya’s work explores identity, femininity, and the evolving relationship between dress and self-expression. Her practice is grounded in questioning how clothing can move beyond fixed definitions, allowing the wearer to navigate between strength, softness, and individuality. She began her design journey working primarily with streetwear, drawn to its accessibility and its ability to challenge conventional ideas of gender through form and styling. As her practice developed, her perspective shifted toward a more personal engagement with femininity. Becoming more comfortable in expressing this aspect of herself, she began exploring eveningwear and more traditionally feminine silhouettes, while still incorporating subtle elements of streetwear. Her work combines structure with delicacy, often balancing tailored forms with intricate detailing. Through this approach, Maya creates garments that embrace femininity without restriction, asserting that it is not limiting or prescriptive, but expansive, expressive, and open to anyone who chooses to inhabit it.
