Reclaimed Traditions

Wafia Mamduha

“Reclaimed Traditions” is a collection of garments constructed from repurposed sarees that were once meant to be discarded. Among them are Jamdani textiles, a traditional and historically significant Bangladeshi fabric known for its intricate craftsmanship. The draping within the designs is directly influenced by the everyday attire of Bangladeshis, the way they wrap their lungis and the fluid drape of their ornas and sarees. Through upcycling, this collection highlights the often-overlooked beauty of rural Bangladesh, preserving fragments of history while giving them a new form.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

A young woman with dark hair pulled up and wearing rectangular sunglasses smiles gently. She is dressed in a white ribbed strapless tube top, a black midi skirt, and has a black faux leather jacket draped over her shoulders. A small gold pendant necklace adorns her neck. She stands on a sunlit sidewalk, with a storefront displaying menus and the number '3423' visible behind her, all bathed in warm golden hour light.

I am drawn to repurposed materials, transforming the discarded into pieces that carry new meaning and expression. My practice is rooted in using fashion as a medium for storytelling and self-expression, challenging how cultural narratives are represented and understood.
