Lover + A Fighter

Portia Alight

This capstone project culminates in the development of Portia J. Alight as a fully realized brand through the art of worldbuilding. Original sketches and hand-painted illustrations, thoughtful product design, and curated brand elements come together in a unified vision. At the centre of the exhibition is Lover + A Fighter, a silk scarf collection that celebrates living “Life as Art”, embracing our full selves with confidence, playfulness, elegance, and unapologetic joy. This project brings the brand’s vibrant heart and ethos to life through newly established colours, logo, custom packaging, campaign visuals, website, socials, bespoke accessories and silk scarf collection. It also marks the debut of the first brand bag, the Ninetail Tote. Together, these elements welcome you into the world of Portia J. Alight.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Portia Alight

Portia J. Alight is a Canadian accessories designer who established her namesake brand in April 2023. She creates with a focus on quality, versatility, and timeless style. With a dash of quirkiness. Her work celebrates individuality and self-expression with inspirations ranging from travel and design movements to themes of empowerment and identity. A former ballerina in Toronto and Amsterdam, she brings a refined sense of movement, storytelling, and artistry into her work.

With a deep love for illustration, Portia specializes in bringing vibrant silk scarf prints to life. Each scarf collection features a series of her original hand-painted artworks, and the final pieces are made using Italian mulberry silk in Como, Italy. Her work has appeared in multiple runway shows and upscale fashion pop-ups, including at 1664 Toronto Fashion Week/Fashion Art Toronto, where she was selected as one of four runway designers sponsored by 1664 Kronenbourg.

Working to expand her offerings post-graduation, Portia is finalizing a line of statement leather accessories, continuing to build a brand that reflects both elegance and personality. Looking ahead to the near future, Portia has plans for bespoke silk scarf collaborations with notable Canadian institutions, as well as creative direction and costume design roles within the Toronto fashion/film scene.

Beyond the world of design, you can catch Portia dancing, boxing, bartending, travelling, and stopping to smell the flowers, embodying her personal and brand ethos, “Life as Art”.
