WHY I HATE FASHION

Sabina Welstead

“Why I Hate Fashion” explores the dichotomy of how we perceive both the creative allure and systemic flaws of the fashion industry. This project combines self-reflections with qualitative interviews exploring participants’ most and least valued garments. To gain a broader perspective, I interviewed a vintage boutique owner in Coburg and the Vice President of Gibson’s Dry Cleaners, who provided me with insightful knowledge into the business aspect of fashion, let alone running your own business. Through investigative documentation, I was able to analyze the evolution of garmentry and the larger culture it speaks towards.

These narratives, paired with original photography of participants’ items and industrial facilities, are portrayed through the form of meme-like imagery and meta-narrative; “Why I Hate Fashion” captures the multifaceted manner in which fashion takes place and an institutional critique of the undesirable and ultimately destructive qualities of creating, buying, and desiring clothing.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Sabina Welstead

I am a creative pursuing photography, photojournalism and art direction. Born and raised in Toronto, I am influenced by the city’s ever-growing multiculturalism and the intersection of subculture and materiality. With a practice that investigates Toronto’s emerging rap scene, I challenge the dominant narrative of homogeneous culture, local sound and identities, and an exploration of underground aesthetics.

My work strives to emulate the overwhelming sensation of being small in a big city and the pursuit of personal identity.
